KOLKATA - An undertrial tried to commit suicide by slitting his vein inside a West Bengal court room Tuesday, police said.

The gory incident took place in front of Third Additional District Judge of Howrah district Shiv Shankar Prasad when Rahim Ali Mondal, 32, broke a window screen and tried to slit his veins with the broken pieces of glass.

According to police, Mondal, a resident of Bongaon in North 24-Parganas district was arrested from Howrah’s Domjur police station area in 2007 with narcotics.

“Mondal was presented before the court Tuesday for trial. But suddenly he lost his temper and broke the window screen. He immediately lifted a big-size piece of glass and tried to commit suicide by cutting his own vein,” a district police officer said.

“The guards immediately came and rescued Mondal who fell unconscious for almost half an hour inside the court room,” he added.

He said later the undertrial was taken to Alipur central correctional home for necessary treatment.
