Mexicali Earthquake Causes Damage

MEXICALI, MEXICO (GaeaTimes.com)- Mexicali, the capital city of the Mexican state of Baja California, had been struck by an earthquake of considerable intensity on Sunday, Apr 5, 2010. The Mexicali earthquake managed to cause considerable damage, although nothing in comparison to the ones that had been incurred by the other earthquakes that have been striking this part of the world of late. According to the seismologists, the earthquake that hit Mexicali lasted for about 35 to 55 seconds. Initially, no reports were available of any damage being incurred by the Mexicali earthquake, but later on, they started pouring in.

According to the reports given by the seismologists department, the maximum damage incurred by the Mexicali earthquake was in the border cities of Mexicali and Calexico. Buildings in both the cities fell, and roads buckled. Water lines ruptured and are in serious need of repair, and power also went down following the earthquake. So far, there has been only one report of death. However, there have been reports of several injuries been incurred by the earthquake. Fires broke out in various parts of the two cities, and phone lines also suffered considerable damage.

The Mexicali earthquake is said to have originated along the San Andreas Fault, at around 3:40 in the afternoon. It measured 7.2 on the Richter Scale, but no tsunami warning was issued. The earthquake, which struck the border cities around 3:40 in the afternoon, was felt across the cities of Los Angeles, San Diego and Phoenix, and also about a dozen other cities and towns. Rides in Disneyland had to be closed down for the time being after the Mexicali earthquake struck.
