BHOPAL - Two alleged agents of ICICI Bank have been arrested for abetting the suicide of a 35-year-old auto driver who failed to repay a loan, police said Wednesday.
Dharam Raj Verma committed suicide March 12 by jumping into Bhopal’s lower lake. In a suicide note written on the back of the bank’s loan card, Verma said he was being hounded by the bank’s “recovery agents”.
A case of extortion and abetment to suicide had been registered against three recovery agents named in the suicide note.
Agents Kamal Suresh Kumar and Raghvendra Singh were arrested Tuesday. The third man, Vijay Pare, is absconding, police officer Devendra Patidar said.
In the suicide note, Verma said that the agents seized his auto he had bought after taking a loan from the bank. He borrowed money from different sources to pay a loan instalment to get back his auto.
Since some instalments remained to be paid, the agents again threatened to seize the auto. This worried Verma, a father of three, and he committed suicide.
