NEW DELHI - A 22-year-old woman died after her clothes caught fire while she was performing puja in her house in northwest Delhi, police said Tuesday. Her husband sustained critical burn injuries when he rushed to her aid.

“Matti was performing Navratra Puja at her Maurya Enclave residence when her clothes caught fire late Monday. Her husband Sumit Aswal tried to save her but also suffered 30 percent burn injuries,” a police official said.

Both were taken to a nearby hospital. “The woman succumbed to burn injuries after recording her statement with a sub-divisional magistrate. She said it was an accident,” the official said.

The husband is recovering in the hospital.
