RAIPUR - A speeding truck crushed to death five men returning on foot from a religious function in Chhattisgarh’s Surguja district early Monday, police said.

Eight people were injured in the accident that took place in Surguja district’s Bhittikala village, about 380 km from here.

“Some 35 people were returning to their homes in the early hours Monday on foot after attending an overnight Hindu religious function when a truck crushed them on a state highway. Four were killed on the spot while one person succumbed to his injuries in hospital,” police said.

The eight injured, also all men, are battling for life in a government hospital. The truck driver was absconding.
