Jayson Williams seeks to toss NYC car wreck case

NEW YORK — Lawyers for former NBA star Jayson Williams say he’d done nothing illegal and was just sitting in his wrecked car when New York City police arrested him on drunken-driving charges earlier this year.

His lawyers filed papers Monday asking a judge to throw out the case.

Prosecutors have no comment. They’ve said Williams’ blood-alcohol level was more than double the legal limit after his car crashed into a tree in Manhattan on Jan. 5.

Williams was sitting in the front passenger seat when police arrived. He told police he wasn’t driving.

Prosecutors have said surveillance video and witnesses establish Williams was alone in the car.

Williams is serving a five-year prison sentence in New Jersey after pleading guilty there to fatally shooting a limo driver. He’s pleaded not guilty in the Manhattan case.
