NEW DELHI - Delhi Police have arrested a man who cheated people by purchasing the luxury cars they were selling by using fake demand drafts. Police have also recovered four luxury cars and a computer used to make the fake drafts.

Police started investigations when several cases of a person using fake demand drafts to buy luxury cars came to light in Delhi and neighbouring areas over the past few months.

“In all such cases, the fake draft happened to be of State Bank of India and the person involved in all the incidents was also found to be the same. The mobile phone this person used would be switched off immediately after the commission of every crime,” said a senior police officer.

“However, the details were analysed and they showed that Ankit Dhir, 31, earlier arrested in several cases, might be involved. He was finally arrested March 14 from near AIIMS Trauma Centre in south Delhi. For every crime, he purchased a new mobile phone and SIM card on fake identities,” the officer added.

“Ankit’s father is a businessman and is involved in the computer business. During his college days in 2000, Ankit came in contact with Rajeev Virmani, who was a pimp. He started working with him and as he was fluent in English, he become a well known face in flesh trade,” the officer said.

According to the police officer, Ankit formed his own gang and started advertising in daily newspapers for providing escort service. He was arrested several times for flesh trade but every time he came out of the jail, he restarted his business.

“He then started making fake demand drafts with which he would buy luxury cars. He is a proclaimed offender in three cases. Several cases have been worked out with his arrest. Efforts are on to arrest other of his associates and recover more cars,” the police officer said.
