298 child sexual abuse cases in last three years

NEW DELHI - There have been nearly 300 cases of child sexual abuse in the country in the last three years and only 66 have been disposed of, Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath said Monday.

“According to figures maintained by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), there were 298 cases of child sexual abuse registered in different states of the country since 2007,” Tirath informed the Rajya Sabha.

Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 61 cases being registered since the inception of the NCPCR in 2007. Delhi came a close second with 52 cases.

Of the cases registered, a mere 66 have been disposed of till now.

“Sixty-six cases have been disposed of till now and 232 cases are still pending,” the minister said.

“The issues relating to child abuse are being addressed by the government through policies and schemes like the National Policy on Children 1974, National Charter for Children 2003, Juvenile Justice Act 2000, Child Labour Act 1986, Integrated Child Protection Scheme and the like,” she added.
