Lifer to five Kolkata cops upheld for murder

KOLKATA - The Calcutta High Court Wednesday upheld the life sentence to five police personnel convicted of killing a city police sergeant in 2003.

A division bench of Justice Amit Talukdar and Justice Raghunath Ray upheld the sentence of five Kolkata Police Reserve Force constables for killing Bapi Sen, a traffic sergeant with Kolkata Police.

Sen was severely assaulted by the five constables for protesting when they tried to molest a woman riding pillion on a motorcycle with one of her friends on the night of Dec 31, 2002. Sen, then 30, died at a city hospital after five days in coma.

They were convicted of murder by a city court in 2004. Justice Basudeb Majumdar of city sessions court sentenced them to life imprisonment July 1, 2004.

The convicts later moved the Calcutta High Court, challenging the lower court’s judgement. The high court too upheld their conviction and punishment.
