AMRITSAR - Nearly 15 kg of heroin was seized Thursday from close to the India-Pakistan border in Punjab’s Ajnala sector after suspected smugglers abandoned the consignment following an exchange of fire with forces on the Pakistani side.

The Border Security Force (BSF) officials said the exchange of fire between smugglers and security forces took place on the Pakistani side of the border.

“No one was injured and no arrest has been made. The 15 kg heroin, one of the big seizures by the BSF, was recovered from near the D.S. Pura BOP (border outpost),” BSF’s Punjab frontier deputy inspector general (DIG) Jagir Singh told IANS.

BSF officials also seized a mobile phone without a SIM card from the spot where the drugs consignment was abandoned by suspected smugglers.

“It is after a long time that the BSF has made such a big seizure in the Ajnala sector,” the DIG added.
