Moderate 5.9 magnitude quake off Nicaragua coast

MANAGUA, Nicaragua — A moderate 5.9-magnitude earthquake has struck off Nicaragua’s southern Pacific coast.

The U.S. Geological Survey says Wednesday’s quake occurred around 9:15 p.m. (0315 GMT). It says the temblor was centered about 65 miles (100 kilometers) south of Managua, the Nicaraguan capital.

Managua residents say the quake was barely felt in the city. The Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies says there were no immediate reports of victims or damages.

The USGS says the quake was about 26.5 miles (42.6 kilometers) beneath the surface.
