Couple held at Delhi airport for human trafficking

NEW DELHI - A travel agent and his wife were arrested from the Indira Gandhi International Airport here on charges of human trafficking, police said Tuesday.
The duo from Punjab charged large sums of money for making fake immigration documents, police added.
Jasbir Singh and his wife Gurdeep Kaur were arrested Sunday after the police placed them under surveillance following a tip off that they were illegally taking another couple to Canada via Fiji.
“Jasbir and Gurdeep are from Ludhiana in Punjab. They were travelling with three others, who were victims of their racket,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGI airport police) O.P. Mishra said in a statement.
The police recovered incriminating documents pertaining to illegal migration of passengers headed to foreign countries.
“The victims contacted the agent after seeing a newspaper advertisement. On interrogation, they revealed that Jasbir and Gurdeep had asked for Rs.2.5 million for getting them to Canada,” the official added.
The accused operated from his office, Trident Immigration Services, in northwest Delhi’s Rohini area.
Police said the agent charged huge sums of money from others seeking to go abroad for work or to migrate.
The police have filed cases of impersonation, forgery, cheating and criminal conspiracy against the duo.
