APNewsBreak: Dartmouth settles ski death lawsuit
CONCORD, N.H. — Dartmouth College has settled a lawsuit filed by the parents of a sophomore who was fatally injured in a skiing accident after she was left alone on a difficult trail during a lesson.
Christina Porter’s mother confirmed the settlement to The Associated Press on Tuesday. Mary Salstrom Porter, of Brooklyn, N.Y., would not disclose the amount, saying lawyers instructed them to say only that it was “settled amicably.”
Christina Porter was not wearing a helmet when she skied off a ledge in February 2004 during a lesson she took to fulfill a physical education requirement. Her parents filed a $40 million negligence and wrongful death lawsuit in 2007.
Dartmouth had maintained Porter’s death was tragic but not the school’s responsibility.
Dartmouth attorney Thomas Quarles Jr. said the settlement was “completely confidential.”
