NEW DELHI - A 28-year-old jeweller was shot dead while his brother had a narrow escape Wednesday when they resisted four armed men’s attempt to rob their shop in east Delhi, police said.

The attack took place in Shashi Garden in Pandav Nagar around 5:30 p.m. and the deceased has been identified as Sunil Kumar Rastogi, a senior police official said.

Sunil and his brother Anil, 32, went to Laxmi Nagar to buy gold jewellery for the shop earlier in the day and returned to their shop-cum-residence when the incident took place, the official said.

“Four men on two motorcycles were following them. While Sunil went inside the shop, Anil was standing outside. The robbers held Anil and entered the shop. Anil then raised an alarm,” the official said.

The robbers panicked and opened fire. Four bullets were fired and one hit Sunil in the neck while another braced Anil, the official said.

Sunil died on the spot while Anil was rushed to a nearby hospital.

The robbers fled from the scene with a bag containing jewellery worth several lakh of rupees.

A case has been registered and efforts are on to nab the culprits, police added.
