High court refuses early hearing to Sajjan Kumar

NEW DELHI - The Delhi High Court Tuesday refused an early hearing to Congress leader Sajjan Kumar who had challenged a trial court order rejecting his anticipatory bail plea in connection with cases related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Apprehending arrest, the former union minister had approached the Delhi High Court against the trial court order. His counsel told a bench of acting Chief Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice Mukta Gupta that the matter was urgent as it was coming up for hearing Wednesday.
On this, the high court refused to give an urgent hearing saying that the case did not require urgency.
A city court had Monday rejected Sajjan Kumar’s anticipatory bail plea saying “charges against him were serious”.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had filed a chargesheet against Sajjan Kumar and others in two cases related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in the national capital.
Sajjan Kumar is among those accused of instigating mobs that killed over 3,000 Sikhs across Delhi in the days following the assassination of then prime minister Indira Gandhi on Oct 31, 1984.
