Policemen who beat Good Samaritan suspended: court told

NEW DELHI - The Delhi Police have suspended two constables who had allegedly beaten up a young man who helped the victim of a roadside brawl in July last year, the Delhi High Court was informed Friday.

Delhi Police counsel Pawan Sharma informed the court that constables Satyabir and Subhash, who had allegedly beaten Sonu, a metal merchant, have been suspended from service and disciplinary action is being taken against them.

Sharma told the court that disciplinary action has also been taken against head constable Sunil, who had contacted Pawan Sharma’s mother on mobile phone after his arrest.

“We are also taking action against Investigating Officer (IO) Ali Ahmed Khan and Inspector Raman Kumar Jha, station house officer of Welcome Police Station, for not taking appropriate action after they received the complaint,” Sharma stated in the status report filed by the Crime Branch.

On the last date of hearing, the court pulled up the police for not taking steps against their own guilty officers and instead trying to protect them.

The court was hearing the case of Sonu Sharma, a metal merchant from Faridabad, who was allegedly thrashed by police on July 30 last year after he took an injured man to a hospital near the Welcome Metro Station in northeast Delhi.

Sonu’s mother alleged that she paid Rs.5,000 in bribe to make the police free her son, who had been illegally detained.
