10-year-old domestic help burnt by employer

NEW DELHI - A 10-year-old girl, working as a domestic help, was allegedly tortured and burnt by her employer in east Delhi, police said Thursday.

The victim was working as a domestic help at a house last several months. Her hand was burnt by a hot utensil by her employer, a senior police officer said.

The incident took place around 11 a.m. in Lakshmi Nagar area of east Delhi.

The girl was taken to a nearby hospital where her condition is said to be stable. She suffered injuries on her hand. One of the neighbour told us that she was hired through a placement agency by the employer, who is an engineer with a private company, the police officer added.

The neighbour revealed that the employer’s wife had also badly beaten the victim a few days ago. He told us that today (Thursday) morning he went to help the victim after hearing her screams, the officer said.

The neighbour then called the police.

The employer has been arrested and a case has been registered against him. The accused claims that it was an accident and not an intentional act, the police officer added.

Police are also looking for the officials of the placement agency from where the victim was hired.
