SRINAGAR - Three army personnel were killed in two avalanches that Wednesday swept down the Siachen glacier in Jammu and Kashmir, an official said.
An avalanche hit the Siachen base camp of the army at 9 a.m., killing one soldier while the other avalanche hit the southern aspect of the glacier at 9.45 a.m. Two soldiers were killed in the second incident, a defence spokesman here said.
The spokesman said heavy snowfall in the region in the last five days had triggered the avalanches.
Seventeen army personnel were killed and 17 were wounded Monday when an avalanche trapped a large group of trainees of the High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) in Gulmarg. The trainees had gone up the Khilanmarg Mountain, five kilometres from Gulmarg, in Baramulla district for practical training.
