Man who taught boy to drive arrested after crash

PORTERVILLE, Calif. — Authorities have arrested a California man who they say was teaching a sixth-grader how to drive when his car crashed into another vehicle, killing the boy, his mother and younger sister.

The Jan. 12 collision in rural Tulare County killed 11-year-old Jose Manuel Silva Covarrubias, his mother, 30-year-old Maria Covarrubias, and 6-year-old sister Elizabeth Silva Covarrabias.

Thirty-five-year-old Froylon Gonzalez was arrested Monday after being released from the hospital where he was healing from injuries suffered in the accident.

He was booked into the Tulare County Main Jail on suspicion of three counts of vehicular manslaughter and two counts of child endangerment.

The boy’s aunt said Gonzalez was a family friend who had been giving the boy driving lessons for several months.
