KOLKATA - One person was killed and five were critically injured when a speeding trailer lost control and hit five vehicles on the second Hooghly bridge here, police said Saturday.
According to witnesses, the trailer carrying a load of logs was heading towards the toll plaza from the Kolkata side when it lost control and hit five other vehicles on the bridge late Friday. It finally overturned and fell onto an SUV that was standing at the toll plaza gate.
“One person, aged about 40, was killed and five others were seriously injured. They are now admitted to the SSKM Hospital with critical injuries,” a traffic police official told IANS.
He said that people went on the rampage immediately after the accident, protesting the lack of traffic control mechanism on the bridge especially during night hours. Agitated locals also pelted stones at the traffic police booth on the second Hooghly bridge.
“Later, police along with the Rapid Action Force (RAF) came and brought the situation under control,” a police officer said.
