NEW DELHI - The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over investigations into the alleged gun-battle in which Manipuri youth Chungkham Sanjit Singh was killed in Imphal July last year, an official said here Monday.

“We have taken over investigations relating to the death of Chungkham Sanjit Singh on the orders of the Imphal Bench of Guwahati High Court. Singh died in an alleged police ‘encounter’ in Imphal Bazar area July 23. In this incident, the death of an unidentified woman is also being investigated,” said a CBI spokesman.

The Guwahati High Court Jan 2 asked the CBI to investigate after Singh’s mother Chungkham Taratombi Leima filed a petition August last year. Leima approached the high court after the alleged gun-battle was exposed in a national weekly magazine.

The CBI said it has registered a case against unknown people of the Manipur police.

“We have constituted a special investigation team headed by Joint Director. The team comprises of two deputy inspector generals, two superintendents of police, a team of experts of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), the CBI and medical experts from Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal and others,” the spokesman added.

The team is camping at Imphal.
