US begins ferrying water and supplies

WASHINGTON — A military official says U.S. military helicopters are ferrying water and other humanitarian relief supplies from an American aircraft carrier to a relief effort under way at the Port-au-Prince airport in earthquake-shattered Haiti.

Michael Wimbish, a spokesman at the U.S. Southern Command headquarters in Florida said Friday that the critical supplies are being transported from the USS Carl Vinson, which arrived earlier in the day.

Wimbish said he has not yet received information from on the ground in Haiti on whether the supplies had then moved out of the airport to distribution centers for quake victims.
