Powerful quake strikes off Samoa Island

WELLINGTON - An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck off Samoa Islands, the US Geological Survey said Thursday.

The quake occurred at 1720 GMT Wednesday with the epicentre 198 km southwest of Apia, the capital of Samoa, Xinhua reported.

There was no report of casualties or damages and no tsunami alert was issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.
