Amid national mourning for Poland’s dead president, lawmakers set to announce new elections

Poland in mourning, new election date to be set
WARSAW, Poland — Polish lawmakers are set to announce the date of early presidential elections after President Lech Kaczynski was killed in a plane crash last weekend along with his wife and 94 others,
Parliament Speaker Bronislaw Komorowski, who is acting president, will give the date later Wednesday. Poland remains in mourning and thousands have come to view the bodies of the president and his wife, who are lying in state.
Elections were to have been held in the fall, but with the president’s death, new elections are to be announced and must take place within 60 days.
Also Wednesday, the bodies of 30 more plane crash victims were being returned to Poland from Russia. Investigators are pointing to human error as the cause of the crash.
