SMOLENSK, POLAND (GaeaTimes.com)- Poland has declared a week of mourning in memory of the victims of the tragic Poland plane crash that occurred in the morning of Saturday, near the Smolensk airport. According to reports provided by the eyewitnesses, the Presidential aircraft, the Tupolev Tu-154, was just about to enter the Smolensk airport when it crashed, apparently due to extremely low visibility owing to a very dense fog. The plane crashed on hitting some tress, and then landed on the ground. The aircraft was carrying 97 passengers, including the President of Poland, President Lech Kaczynski and his wife, and also a number of eminent Polish figures, like some prominent historians, an army chief and a bank governor.
The Poland plane crash has been described as one of the most tragic incidents to have occurred in the country, competing with the massacre of a huge number of Polish officials by the Soviet Union. In fact, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that ever since the Soviet era came to an end, no incident of such tragic magnitude had taken place in the country. In fact, the irony of the situation is striking; the Polish President was flying to Smolensk to attend an event in commemoration of the Polish massacre.
The Poland plane crash has left the country in shock, along with the rest of the world, possibly owing to the fact that a huge number of the most prominent figures of the country have perished together in the crash. Political leaders from all over the world have expressed their shock, and given their condolences to the bereaved families.
