Libertador O’Higgins, Chile (GaeaTimes.com)- Chile was hit by another series of aftershocks on Mar 11, 2010. The shocks occurred sometime around 11:40 in the morning, and one of them measured quite high on the Richter Scale, at 6.9, making it almost equal to the one that had hit Haiti in January. However, there is some dispute regarding the magnitude of the Chile earthquake of Mar 11, with some of the sources reporting that it had measured 7.2 in the seismograph. The earthquake hit Libertador O’Higgins, a few miles away from the central Chilean city of Valparaiso. The epicenter of the earthquake fell in the city of Rancagua, and according to the United States Geological Survey, it originated 11 kilometers deep.
A tsunami alert had been issued following the Chile earthquake on Mar 11, but it was lifted about a couple of hours later. Initially, it was being reported that the earthquake has not incurred any further damage in the nation still reeling from the major 8.8 earthquake and its many aftershocks, but later on, some sources reported some damage. However, an estimate has not yet been made, and there have been no reports of any loss of life.
The Chile earthquake of Mar 11 is being considered to be the biggest of all the aftershocks that has hit Chile in less than a month since the first major quake took place. Till date, the country has suffered at least 150 earthquakes. At the time of the earthquake, the Presidential inauguration was taking place, which had to be stopped midway due to the tremors. Needless to say, the Chile earthquake on Mar 11 created ample panic among the citizens, many of whom came out of their homes into the streets.
