5 freight train cars derail in Philly; none hurt
PHILADELPHIA — Authorities say five cars on a freight train derailed in downtown Philadelphia, but none tipped over and there were no injuries or hazardous materials involved.
CSX spokesman Bob Sullivan says the 123-car train was heading from outside Albany, N.Y., to Hamlet, N.C., when it derailed about 10:35 p.m. Monday.
Battalion Fire Chief Mike Kane tells The Philadelphia Inquirer that the cars apparently failed to switch from one track to another.
Sullivan says crews from Jacksonville, Fla.-based CSX were heading to the tracks to get the cars back on the rail.
Sullivan says the derailment would not affect passenger trains because CSX uses separate tracks in the area. Stations serving Amtrak and Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority commuter rail lines are just blocks away.
