KOLKATA - In a dramatic attack that took everybody by surprise, a complainant shot dead a man accused of rape outside a court in West Bengals Hooghly district Tuesday, police said.
The shooting occurred outside the Chandannagar court when Somnath was brought for trial. Sheikh Arsad, who had filed the rape case against him, fired at him from close range.
As Somnath collapsed groaning, several people grabbed the killer, Superintendent of Police Tanmoy Roy Chowdhury said.
According to court sources, Arsad had filed a case in 2007 against Somnath, alleging he had kidnapped his wife and raped her.
After several hearings, the court asked both the accused and the complaint to appear before the court Tuesday.
Somnath, who was out on bail, was waiting outside the courtroom. Suddenly, Arsad arrived and shot him, said Somnaths lawyer Amit Kumar Agwaral.
Somnath apparently used to visit Somnaths house regularly and became friendly with his wife Tumpa Chaterjee.
