BAMAKO - At least 36 people were killed and 70 others injured Monday night in a stampede that occurred in a stadium in Mali’s capital Bamako, media reports said.

The Republic of Mali is a landlocked country in western Africa.

The accident occurred at the 25,000-seat Modibo Keita Stadium when the crowd wanted to touch a renowned imam, who had finished delivering his sermon and was proceeding to give a benediction, Xinhua reported.

Many of those injured were taken to hospitals in Bamako.
