BERN - The European Union’s embassy in Switzerland was evacuated Thursday after the discovery of a suspicious package addressed to the bloc’s ambassador, police said.

The evacuation took place just hours after two parcel bombs went off at the Swiss and Chilean embassies in Rome - injuring two people, one seriously.

Most of the area around the EU embassy was also evacuated, Bern cantonal police said, noting that no specific threat was included with the package addressed to EU Ambassador Michael Reiterer.

Swiss authorities were declining to comment further on the incidents in their own capital and in Rome.
