LUCKNOW - At least three policemen were injured in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district Monday after a mob turned violent during protests against the murder of a local youth.

Hundreds of residents blocked roads, targeted vehicles and torched the house and eating joint owned by Bandu Khan, the prime accused in the case, who is absconding, a police officer said.

Khan and some of his friends attacked 25-year-old Suleman, a resident of Jamalpur area, after a heated argument during a cricket match Sunday. Suleman later succumbed to his injuries.

The situation was brought under control only after some senior police officers assured the locals that Khan would be arrested within two days.

“Additional security has been deployed in the area. The situation is now well under control,” Superintendent of Police (city) Maan Singh Chauhan told reporters in Aligarh, some 300 km from Lucknow.

“We have detained four people in connection with the murder. Raids are being carried out to arrest the prime accused,” he added.
