LUCKNOW - Upset over her poor academic performance, a teenaged class 5 student committed suicide by hanging herself in her house here Tuesday, police said.

Soni Kumari, 13, who studied at the Suchetna School, hanged herself from a ceiling fan with a ‘dupatta’ (scarf) at her residence in Sarojini Nagar area.

“Preliminary investigations reveal Soni took the extreme step because of her poor academic record,” police inspector Arun Kumar told reporters.

“We have learnt that Soni was quite weak in her studies and was not able to pass class five for the last three-four years,” he added.

According to police, the suicide was detected after Soni’s brother peeped inside a window after she did not responded to his repeated knocking on the door.
