PHILLAUR - Punjab Police will soon recruit 500 women constables, the state police chief said Friday.

Addressing a gathering after the passing out parade of 464 women police constables at the Punjab Police Academy (PPA) in Phillaur, 125 km from here, Director General of Police (DGP) P.S. Gill said parents should encourage girls to join the police force.

“The successful training of these highly talented girls is all set to add a golden chapter in the glorious history of Punjab Police,” Gill said.

“The Punjab Police are preparing for the challenges of new millennium after successfully defeating the nefarious designs of an unfriendly neighbour, Left-wing extremists and drug cartels. Besides, it (the force) is also in the process of acquiring new technologies and skills to become an important partner in the developmental process of the country,” he added.

Punjab had faced a prolonged phase of terrorism between 1981 and 1995, which left thousands dead.
