Pakistani city jails two dozen bakers

PESHAWAR - Over two dozen bakers were jailed as their association observed a shutdown in this Pakistani city to demand an increase in price of unleavened bread.

The bakers are demanding that either they should be provided wheat flour at subsidised rates or they should be allowed to revise the price of roti, Dawn reported Thursday.

Officials went to different parts of the district and arrested 25 bakers, called nanbais.

All the tandoors - where the unleavened bread is baked - in Peshawar were closed following a strike call by the bakers’ association.

People faced problems due to non-availability of roti.

Mumtaz Khan, a shopkeeper, said that he used to take lunch at his workplace but due to strike of nanbais he went home to have his meal.

An official said there was no shortage of wheat flour in Peshawar.
