LUCKNOW - Six policemen were injured when a group of people in Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh attacked them for trying to arrest a criminal belonging to their village, police said Monday.
Armed with sticks and stones, the locals in the Parsia village clashed with the police team that had gone to arrest Harendra Kumar, a criminal from the village, late Sunday.
Kumar has 12 criminal cases pending against him, including those of loot and abduction.
“The villagers first warned us not to arrest Harendra. However, as our team of 15 policemen proceeded towards the village, they were attacked by the villagers,” police inspector A. Rahman told reporters Monday in Deoria, some 300 km from Lucknow.
“Six policemen, including a sub-inspector, were injured in the attacks. All of them are admitted in a hospital and are out of danger,” he added.
The personnel had to seek assistance from nearby police stations to bring the situation under control.
“With the help of the additional force, we later managed to arrest Harendra while he was trying to leave the village,” he added.
Additional security has been deployed at the village, and the situation is under control, police said.
