Punjab man gets 10-year jail for wife’s dowry death

CHANDIGARH - A city court here Thursday awarded 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment to a Punjab man for his wife’s dowry death in 2001.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Lalit Batra also slapped a fine of Rs.2,000 on Bhupinder Singh Gill, a resident of Moga town in Punjab.
According to police, Gill, who was working as zonal manager in a leading tyre company, wedded Chandigarh’s Sector 33 resident Tikapreet Feb 20, 2000. She committed suicide Jan 29, 2001 by consuming poison.
Her father Nirvay Singh Pandher filed a complaint with Chandigarh Police, alleging that harassment by members of his daughter’s in-laws’ family and husband drove her to commit suicide.
“They used to beat my daughter and force her to bring more dowry. Though I had given some cash to them, they did not stop harassing my daughter,” said Pandher, a retired army officer.
Police booked Gill, his father Karamjit Singh Gill and mother Parvinder Kaur. However, parents of the convict were acquitted by the court.
