LUCKNOW - Two motorcycle-riding assailants shot dead a senior government doctor here Wednesday morning, police said.

Vinod Kumar Arya, 55-year-old chief medical officer for family welfare, was fatally shot in the Vikas Nagar area.

Additional Director General (Law and Order) Brij Lal told reporters: “Its a very serious case. I have instructed the sleuths of Special Task Force (STF) to assist the police in solving the case. We will soon nab the culprits.”

“The assailants shot at the doctor while he was on a morning walk barely 300 metres from his house, and escaped,” police inspector Gangesh Tripathi told reporters.

“We are yet to trace the gunmen, who were on a black bike, and establish the motive behind the murder,” he added.

Arya was also a senior doctor with the Balrampur Hospital in Lucknow.

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh Provincial Medical Services’ Association (UPPMSA) has called a day-long strike Thursday in government hospitals across the state to protest the murder.

Government doctors will boycott out-patient department services in hospitals, but emergency services would not be affected in the strike,” UPPMS general secretary B.P. Singh told reporters here.
