Young man dies in police custody

AGARTALA - A 25-year-old man died in police custody in Tripura, triggering street protests by the Congress which demanded a high-level probe into the incident, officials said Monday.

Hanif Mian was found hanging in the toilet of the Bishalgarh police station lock-up in western Tripura late Sunday, two days after his arrest, police spokesman Nepal Das told reporters.

“A police officer who was on duty was suspended from service for negligence,” Das said. The Congress organised protests against the death, alleging the man had been killed.
