Delhi to host global road safety meet

NEW DELHI - With India accounting for about 10 percent of the 13 million deaths in road accidents around the world every year, around 400 road safety experts from over 20 countries will meet here next month to deliberate on measures to reduce road fatalities.
The two-day global meet “Institutional Arrangements for Reduction of Road Fatalities” is being organised in New Delhi by the Geneva-based International Road Federation (IRF) from Nov 25.
“Some of the subjects that will be discussed will include institutional coordination for road safety, dedicated road safety fund, changes in Motoer Vehicle Act, vehicle design for safety, road safety through engineering measures, safety during road operations, safety on high speed corridors, advanced traffic management systems, public education, intelligent highways and vehicle safety devices,” IRF chairman K.K. Kapila said.
Recently, India’s road transport and highways ministry and the IRF had launched a joint initiative in the country aiming to reduce fatal road accidents by 50 percent in the next three years.
