CHANDIGARH - As many as 380 cartons of Indian made foreign liquor, which were being smuggled to Gujarat, have been seized and two men arrested, police said Wednesday.

The operation cell of Chandigarh Police laid a trap near suburb Manimajra after a tip-off.

“A truck was intercepted and 380 cartons of Indian made foreign liquor were recovered from it. Driver Surinder Kumar and his helper Sunil Kumar were arrested,” a police official.

“They loaded the truck from a godown in the industrial area in Chandigarh and were taking it to Gujarat. Earlier also we received complaints that liquor was smuggled from the same godown to other states,” the official said.

Many cases of liquor smuggling have come into light in the recent past here as it is comparatively cheaper in Chandigarh than in neighbouring states. Gujarat is a dry state which prohibits sale or consumption of liquor.
