GANDHINAGAR - Ahmedabad police Monday night busted a gang of auto thieves who specialised in fitting second-hand cars with engines of stolen vehicles and selling these off in different parts of Gujarat, officials said.

“We have arrested four persons, and recovered 10 cars and three two-wheelers so far. The list is expected to grow,” said S.M. Chaudhary, officer of the Ahmedabad crime branch, who is heading the probe said Tuesday.

The group’s mastermind is still absconding, he added.

The gang would steal cars in Ahmedabad and take them to a village near Patan town, some 150 km away, where one of the gang members owned a garage. The engines and spare parts of the cars would then be fitted in second-hand cars and the vehicles sold off, which made it difficult to detect the vehicles, officials said.
