LUCKNOW - Two aides of gangster Munna Bajrangi were arrested following a gun battle in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi district Wednesday, police said.
Rajesh Chaudhary and Anshu were arrested from Sarnath area in a joint operation carried by sleuths of the special task force (STF) and police.
“The two are involved in several heinous crimes. There are six cases of murder pending against Rajesh Chaudhary,” said an STF official in Varanasi, some 250-km from Lucknow.
“When we intercepted the two, they started firing at us. It was only after nearly 45 minutes of gun battle that the two were arrested,” the official added.
Two pistols and several cartridges were recovered from them.
Bajrangi, who is presently in police custody, murdered Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ramachandra Singh in Jaunpur and the same party’s Anil Rai in Varanasi in 2003.
In 2005, he murdered the BJP’s Uttar Pradesh legislator Krishnanand Rai along with his seven bodyguards.
