CHENNAI - A 55-year-old woman, daughter of late Mumbai don Varadaraja Mudaliar, and her 60-year-old husband were charred to death in their bedroom after a snag in their air conditioner caused a blast, police said Wednesday.

Mahalakshmi and her husband Hemachander were charred to death Tuesday night, police said.

According to police, an electrical snag could have resulted in their air conditioner catching fire.

The victims’ two maids, sleeping in a different room, heard a blast and alerted the neighbours, who called in police and fire department personnel.

The fire fighters, on entering the house, found the couple charred to death.

According to police, the post mortem on the two bodies is being conducted at the Government Royapettah Hospital here.

Police officials confirmed to IANS that Mahalakshmi was the daughter of Mudaliar.

During the 1970s-80s, Mudaliar was believed to be a major underworld player in Mumbai. Later, he shifted to Tamil Nadu.
