Wis. levee holds, but floodwater seeps through
MADISON, Wis. — Authorities say floodwater hasn’t breached a sand levee protecting an isolated neighborhood in a southern Wisconsin town but it has flowed around the levee.
State Department of Natural Resources spokesman Greg Matthews said Tuesday that the swollen Wisconsin River is seeping through sections of the levee in the town of Caledonia, near Portage, but that the levee has held.
Floodwater from the river has surged around the end of the levee into the Blackhawk Park neighborhood and has left low-lying areas underwater. Some homes have been evacuated.
Floodwater from a nearby lake has also poured into the neighborhood.
(This version corrects that floodwater hasn’t breached the levee in Caledonia but is seeping through)
