Typhoon Fanapi kills 70 in China

BEIJING - At least 70 people were killed and 65 were missing after the typhoon Fanapi hit southern part of China early this week, triggering heavy rain, floods and mud-slides, authorities said.
Rescuers combing the mud-slide debris found more than a dozen bodies Friday, bringing the death toll of typhoon Fanapi to 70 in Guangdong province, while 65 people remain missing, disaster relief authorities said.
According to Xinhua news agency, helicopters were dispatched to send relief goods — water, food, and tents — to floods-isolated areas in the worst-hit counties of Gaozhou, Xinyi and Yangchun, they said.
About 99,500 people were evacuated from Guangdong, where Some 3,765 houses collapsed, 42,190 hectares of farmland were damaged, and the economic loss reached 2.4 billion yuan, according to official data.
Typhoon Fanapi, the 11th and strongest typhoon that hit China this year, entered Fujian province at 7 a.m. Monday, wreaking havoc in the neighbouring Guangdong province. No casualties have been reported in Fujian.
