UNNAO - Four teenaged members of a family drowned in a pond in this Uttar Pradesh district Monday, police said.

The four - Sheebu, Shahdab, Sallu and Roshan - aged around 18 years and residents of the Ravidas Nagar village, drowned in the pond in Gangaghat town while fishing.

“While the four were fishing, Sheebu accidentally fell into the pond and started drowning. In order to rescue him, the other three also jumped in and eventually all the four died,” police inspector Anirudh Singh told reporters.

“Under normal circumstances, the water level in the pond poses no threat. But owing to heavy rainfall it has risen significantly,” he said.

The four bodies were later fished out by the villagers, who alleged that the four could have been saved if the police team had arrived on time after they were informed of the accident.

Unnao is around 65 km from Lucknow.
