KOLKATA - All police stations across West Bengal have been alerted and security beefed up in the state, particularly in and around this capital, following the shooting at Jama Masjid in Delhi, police said here Sunday.

“Security has been beefed up. All the entry and exit points to the city have been strengthened,” said Javed Shamim, joint commissioner of police, Kolkata Police.

City Police Commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakraborty convened an emergency meeting of senior police officers here to review the security arrangements after two motorcycle-borne gunmen opened random fire at one of the entrances to the historic Delhi mosque Sunday, leaving two Taiwanese tourists wounded and sparking panic.

Vital installations like the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, the two important railway stations Howrah and Sealdah, Metro railway stations have been put under heightened police vigil.

In view of the coming Durga Puja festival, crowded places like shopping malls have also been put under increased surveillance.

“I would request everybody not to lend their ear to rumours,” said Shamim.

“All the police stations have been alerted and intelligence units have been strengthened,” said Surojit Kar Purokayastha, inspector general of police (law and order).
