KOLKATA - Four people were killed and another person was injured when a car rammed into a tea stall at Boroduwari in West Bengal’s Malda district early Saturday, police said.

The accident took place when the driver of the car carrying a Congress panchayat committee (village council) president of Harishchandrapur block 2, lost control and slammed into the stall running over several people.

Three people died on the spot and another person succumbed to injuries in a local hospital, Malda Superintendent of Police Bhuban Chandra Mandal said.

One of the victims was a local Congress leader.

Following the incident, agitated locals damaged the car and staged a road blockade.

The panchayat committee functionary, who was in the car and sustained minor injuries, has been detained for interrogation. The driver has also been taken into custody.
