KANPUR - A man, who charged police with not making any efforts to trace his kidnapped daughter, set himself afire in the deputy inspector general (DIG) of police’s office in this Uttar Pradesh district Friday, officials said.

Ramanand, 50, said his 23-year-old daughter was abducted around five months ago from the Kalyanpur area in Kanpur, some 80 km from Lucknow. The policemen, who are supposed to carry out investigations in the case, had even bluntly told him not to meet them in connection with the case, he claimed.

Ramanand, who suffered multiple burn injuries in the incident, was taken to a hospital, where doctors stated his condition is serious.

“We have initiated an inquiry into the case,” Superintendent of Police Kushar Saurabh told reporters, declining to comment any further.
