Three arrested for stealing railway passenger’s jewellery

NEW DELHI - Three people accused of stealing jewellery from the luggage of a railway passenger have been arrested, police said Thursday.

Rakesh, 26 and Joginder Singh, 22 stole 11 diamond necklaces worth Rs.60 lakh from a passenger. They sold it to their associate Kitab Singh, a goldsmith, police said.

“The gang used to operate in the air-conditioned compartments of trains running between Mumbai and Delhi,” a police officer said.

The trio was arrested from Mongolpuri area of outer Delhi on a tip-off, the official said.

Diamond jewellery worth Rs.2 lakh and other stolen articles were recovered from their possession.

“The stolen jewellery was sold in places like Hisar and Bhiwani (towns in Haryana). We are investigating further,” the officer said.
